The wooden synagogue in Piatra-Neamț is the oldest in the country and the only wooden synagogue in Eastern Europe fully preserved. It was built following the Royal Church issued in July 1766 by the Lord Grigore Alexandru Ghica, on the foundation of a synagogue from the end of the 15th century. The place bears the name of Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidism. Legend tells us that he retired to Mount Ceahlău and from there would have come to the synagogue in Piatra-Neamț on several occasions.
